Sluice Exchange is a peripatetic biennial expo which this November brings approximately 20 visiting galleries and projects to Berlin. Sluice, in partnership with Das Institut für Alles Mögliche – both non-profit arts orgs with a focus on supporting the artist & curator-led sector – will stage a three day event for galleries and projects that share similar foundational ideologies of independence and artistic engagement. Each participating Berlin-based and international gallery will combine to present a weekend of exhibitions, performances, talks & screenings. Whilst the UK is in the throes of disengagement from the EU – 2018 is an opportune time for a joint UK/EU initiative to deliver an internationally focused event. The expo ambitiously represents the independent art world by examining how global political developments impact on artists at a local level. The Sluice expo looks past current nationalistic trends to interrogate possible futures.
One of the questions Sluice asks is how can we advance emergent discourse via increased interaction on a local, national and international level? This question is intended to reflect our concerns and maybe those of some of the galleries and projects we work with. The Berlin edition of EXCHANGE is broadly themed around the local as transnational ideas battle re-emergent nationalistic tendencies. The artist/curator-led scene is often tied to the local (usually influenced by funding parameters or lack of funding altogether). But there is often an awareness that if the local isn’t positioned within a broader inter/national context that it risks becoming parochial. EXCHANGE BERIN focuses on the importance of solidarity, inclusion and collaboration. Is there a way to square internationalism with the destructive nature of globalisation? As nationalism rears its head around the world what response does art have?

A PRODUCTION OF NOTHING is the attempt to assemble works which are almost invisible, incidental and that exist for a short period of time only into an ephemeral exhibition. For the period of three days some of the works will be presented or highlighted in conversation pieces among participants.
The exhibition is a continuous process - works are installed - a conversation comes up - a performance begins - the presentation gets rearranged - coffee is made - a poem is read - .... The organisation, the art making and its presentation are intertwined and a choreography of situations and events arise.
Participants are invited to get involved and bring finished work, develop on site or report about their practice. Each one is explicitly invited to try out something new and to experiment along. The venue will be available daily September 14 – 16 from 1 – 5 pm for internal intervention and exploration and from 5 – 9 pm open to public.
The title of the show is a first work and taken from the project „SHOW TITLES“ - SHOW TITLE, #724 by Stefan Brüggemann.
ARTISTS: Manuel Bonik, Stefan Brüggemann, Ilse Ermen, Karl Heinz Jeron, Alana Lake, Franziska Pätzold, Veronica Reichl, Stefan Riebel, Rosa Schmidt + Katharina Resch, Joel Verwimp + Lindsey Drury, Ladislav Zajac
MUSIC: Manuel Bonik, John Kameel Farah, Christopher Fröhlich, Siegfried Kärcher, Udo Lindemann

Although Netflix comes over as the best reality blurring drug of our time it does not open the horizon but closes it. I use a certain painting style to depict that.

Artists: Shinae Kim /JIIIIIN & GRAYCODE (KOR), Jimok Choi (KOR), Ae Hee Lee (KOR), Byung Chul Kim (KOR), Amalia Valdés (CHL), Juan Pablo Nazar (CHL), Michael Lopez (USA), Michael Lachmann & Lyndsay Pomerantz (CAN)
The Korean Culture Centre is inviting Korean and international artists to participate in a dialogue in the centre’s gallery. It is the first time that the Korean Culture Centre has presented the work of both Korean and international artists. The artists involved are from South Korea, Chile, the US and Canada.
The point of departure of ONE ON ONE - Aftermath is the exploration of the gallery of the Cultural Section of the Embassy of Republic of Korea as a site for architectonic, historical and cultural connotation.
The artists are confronted with and respond to various conditions as inspiration for the work; the two-dimensional floor plan of the gallery space, the furnishings, cultural and institutional spatial specifications, as well as a relation to Berlin all of which dictate the themes found within the exhibition. The performative, situative and multimedia works will together create a polyphonic orchestration.
In cooperation with Keum Art Projects & Korean Culture Centre
