The Odyssey Drawings and their Segments
June of 2018 brought me to what was my third artist residency in Berlin. Contrary to the advice I had overheard at many art seminars I rarely go on a residency without deciding a theme before hand. I have tried doing the alternative and have spent a long time looking at blank walls and shelving anything that was made on my return home.* So, I had completed a number of paintings on Ancient Greek themes prior to my interest in The Odyssey but I took this opportunity to pursue the story in its entirety hopefully bringing it to a pictorial conclusion.
The Odyssey by Homer is not a linear story. It jumps around backwards and forwards documenting the return of Odysseus to Ithaca after the Siege of Troy and his occasional imprisonments and adventures along the way. On his return he ‘dispenses’ with the suitors (Procti) who have been vying for the hand of Penelope the wife of Odysseus in the expectancy that Odysseus is dead. Much to the disgust of Telemachus his son they are also drinking and eating him out of house, home and inheritance so he goes in search of his father and has his own set of adventures. Along their different ways they have to deal with the vagaries and interference of various Greek gods all of whom it would seem to me could have fixed everyone’s problems from the start but chose not to. It’s as if they have made a decision not to intervene in the perverse assessment that they would like to see what might happen. Typical!
The drawings are made with a brush and acrylic gouache and are all linear in construction. The linear aspect is what distinguishes them as drawings although I accept that not all drawing is linear. Lines indicate activity, movement, motion, and other physical actions but they can also replicate mental activity as we think about what we see and feel. They are not symbolic but represent certain elements in the story. But more importantly how those elements are blended with the style and practice of my accumulated knowledge that I have from doing this type of work for so long. Just as a still life painter brings certain objects together in a composition, I bring ideas and responses together in the same way.
If all goes well there will be 9 drawings, 57x57cms each and 9 Segments approximately 20x20cms each. The Segments are a small, square section of the bottom right hand corner of each drawing with occasional additions or adjustments.
Although the work is based on a story I am not telling a story through the work. Each piece, be it a drawing or a painting, must be taken on face value. There is no meaning other than what you see and if you read something into the works then I am happy that you do so but it is not necessary. I’m in the business of aesthetics, of making art that looks good, that is all, the history of which goes back hundreds of years.

*No efforts, however unsuccessful should be considered failures. We learn from our mistakes and artists out of all the professions are in the business of failure which is why we keep doing what we do. I have spoken to writers who have written many books and they too stand over only one or two as successes, not in sales or acclaim but in writing terms.

In the framework of the open studio I will present fragments of my work created during my residence at the Institute. During my stay, besides painting in the studio I tried to map the greenery of the city by randomly exploring Friedrichshain on a bicycle. Parks and water are a special contrast between the city and nature. I photographed some places where the water was present and by manipulating photos or surrounding situations I created a bizarre "new environment".
Currently my painting is more meditative and minimalist. Abstract paintings are a continuation of my main thematic line, the reflection of time, the flow of time, the moment, and also the absurd nature of the environment I create on the canvas. The essence of nature as a wider space of our being is present in my work, whether in painting, or in other media, such as video and photography.
Thank for the opportunity - Institut fur Alles Mogliche

As part of the Art Berlin Now - I.A.M residency program at the Institut für Alles Mögliche, Jang, Young Ae is presenting her new works created during her three month stay in Berlin.
Jang is a scholarship holder of the Jeonlabukdo Cultural Tourism Foundation in Jeonju, Republic of Korea.
Exploring the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious in her painting, she usually finds her motifs in everyday life: people, objects, architectures and landscapes. On Korean mulberry paper using Korean natural color pigments, she develops narrative references from her sensory experiences into a real and surreal scenery. Her paintings deal with psychic, sensory relation with objects and people she encounters, questioning a state of the unconscious, unknown and unseen. Jang rearranges the motifs into a self-contained, imaginary space, inviting the viewer into her private and intimate cosmos. In the open studio she presents new paintings inspired by her five sensory experiences in Berlin: smell, taste, touch, hear, watch.

American artist Erin Mitchell concludes her residency at the Institut für Alles Mögliche Hauptstadtstudio with an immersive, site-specific installation that reanimates the idealized virtual landscapes of our desktop wallpapers.
An inquiry into the relationship between nature and technology and the boundaries between physical and virtual spaces, Erin Mitchell encourages us to reexamine our relationships to these images and reimagine the ways we understand and move within these two often competing realities.
About the Artist:
Erin Mitchell (b. 1989, USA) is an emerging artist whose work has been featured in a considerable number of exhibitions worldwide.
Her most recent solo exhibition is "Uncanny Valley" at SomoS in Berlin, Germany (2017). Informed by her background in print media, she works with a wide range of mediums and materials. Referring to the ever-changing and expanding digital world, Erin’s works reflect her attempt in explaining how virtual activity exerts influence on our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Was ist Ihr Lieblingsbuch?
Wo? Berlin-Friedrichshain, Schreinerstr. 20, U-Bahn Samariterstraße.

LAUNDRY LECTURES
Again, it's time: all clothes are dirty and must be washed. What to take to the laundry except powder and textiles? What to do to spend the time without staring unmeditatively in the bulbs of the machines?
Independently of your possessing a washing machine or not, if you are on holidays or on residency or if your machine works perfectly: the question what to read? is always present. Do you still want to read at all? Are'nt you entirely fed up with the higher literary entertainment of the monthly praised new geniusses and the arguable Nobel prize winners? All these family stories and dime novels* on the best seller lists? How to make up your mind? Where to begin, when you can't decide between three academic essais? As for fiction, will the "Dictionary of Novel Beginnings" be enough? How many books of highly praised authors did you push away after the second page or earlier? What is your favourite book?
These and other burning questions of the artistic and literary existence (How to disappear effectively, what to do with your own legacy…?) will be discussed at HAUPTSTADTSTUDIO. The artist will be present from Thur 31.8. to Sat 02.09, special action Sat 02.09, from 5 pm (Lectures, books, images, cards, drinks). You can bring your own books and questions. WHOEVER WANTS TO READ SOMETHING / OWN TEXTS IS INVITED TO DO SO. Please make an appointment in this case [o176 96 59 84 o2] or ermen[at]vtxmail.ch.
Where: Berlin-Friedrichshain, Schreinerstr. 20, U-Bahn Samariterstraße
P.S. There is no washing mashine

'Index/Systematization' aims to dig into the problem of representation as a mean of exploring new languages.
The project is based on exploration, research and development of a recording mode. The aim is to think over the records generated and at the same time the registration procedure itself, while allowing the appearance of ways, a priori, unintended. A ‘loom up’ of a material that allows reflecting both on the material produced as on the object registered.
This 'Index/Systematization' will be carried out using just a 2D desktop scanner (A4 / Letter size), exploring its technical and material possibilities of registration of different objects (material category) and even situations (performatic category.)
This project proposes by using a 2D scanner to record objects partially -as some of their faces will always be out of registration-, to grant the record the possibility of uncertainty, of ‘biased’ knowledge about one thing. At the same time the record obtained by its ‘index’ status can recognize the material qualities of the object, but of course only partially.
